  • Mental model

How content is organized should largely be driven by the underlying mental model that the user should have when navigating the content or capabilities

Good information architecture is one of three pillars of findability, but it’s an abstraction by itself. Usable navigation and clear nomenclature, driven by user-centered design and solid content strategy, respectively, are the two other pillars required to complete the trinity.

My approach to information architecture

IA activities will depend a lot on the precise problem at hand, but I tackle these challenges with the following tools and information:

  • Concept models
  • Taxonomy
  • Analysis of content and capabilities (either existing and/or planned)
  • Task and needs analysis
  • Data about usage behavior
